Stage 1 : Castelnuovo Cilento / Pollica

The journey starts from the small town of Castelnuovo Cilento, a very pretty village dominated by the crenellated tower of the Talamo-Atenolfi castle. From the plaza in front of the manor house, the extraordinary view provides an overview of the Way ahead. Castelnuovo is also the town of Guerino Galzerano, a controversial figure who lived between 1922 and 2002, known for his rocambolic life, but especially for the mosaic works he created and found in every corner of the town. The stage as a whole does not present major difficulties; after about 11 km from the start, we begin to climb up a hilly section with an average gradient of less than 5 percent. At Acquavella you can stop for a brief rest before continuing in the direction of Stella Cilento (386 m a.s.l.) on the slopes of the mountain of the same name. From here, continuing for about 3 km on the SP77, one can stretch to the small village of Omignano, where near the small square it is possible to visit the tiny workshop of basket maker Giuseppe Giuliano. Returning to the same road, at the first crossroads we join SP15C, and continue in the direction of Galdo Cilento, where a stop at the Literary Café, “a place where ideas and thoughts take shape,” strongly desired by Angelo Vassallo, the “Fisherman Mayor,” is almost obligatory. Your stop will end in Pollica, a village situated on the southern slopes of Mount Stella (1131m above sea level) and overlooking the beautiful sea of Acciaroli. Sea that you can reach the next morning, at first light, when the fishermen will still be returning from their night fishing.
